Born in East Lothian in 1865, she attended Saltoun School. Aged 15 she went as a maid to West Pilton Farmhouse. Her employer, Mrs Stenhouse, a widowed lady, may have attended Cramond Kirk some 2 miles away for, aged 16, my grandmother became a member.
In 1883 she married Thomas Danby Westwater, master shoemaker, of Whinstane, Davidsons Mains, where she remained all her life. When widowed, her daughter Margaret, husband William Redpath and daughter Gladys joined her and were also members of the congregation.
Excerpt from “Life & Work”, July 1951:
“….. The Reverend Leonard Small presented to Mrs Jane Hay Lawrie Westwater, a Bible to mark 70 years membership of Cramond Kirk”.
He also remembered his induction in 1944 when, as the oldest member, she had helped him on with his robes – a ceremony known as “cloaking” the new incumbent. She died in 1958 aged 93.
